Aiding Reading Deficiency in Ghana With The “All African Book Fair”

So many books, so little time.”

Frank Zappa

“When I was growing up I wanted to be a detective, a carpenter, globe trotter, own a castle and be an amazing wife. That is to tell you just how free of what I thought was possible, all because of books. The more hours of TV the African child watches, the fewer options they think to have in life. The contents are definitely one sided. We as Africans have a lot of stories to share and read among ourselves.” – Organizer, Grace Dorcas Annan.

According to a national early grade reading assessment for primary 2 students across 738 public schools in Ghana, run by the GES, RTI, and USAID, a few years ago, there is a large gap in the children’s ability to read with a comprehension showing a pressing need for extra support in the area of literacy.

And for this reason, amongst others, the organizers of the All African Book Fair are working to make this fair a transformative project for readers in the Ghanaian community. The first edition of the All African Book Fair (AABF) is set to take place from the 20th – the 21st of August 2022 (at Mmofra park Dzorwulu,) in Accra, Ghana.

The book fair is organized by Gracie Grace Reads, a children’s book publisher, with the aim to bridge the large diversity margin in the children’s book publishing field and to aid in the reading deficiency in Ghana.

“Creating AABF, which is primarily for African creatives is my quantifiable action to take after a lot of individual conversations about book inclusion, deficiency and lack of effort in our region.” – Grace Dorcas Annan.

The fair aims to become one of the largest and most established book fairs in Ghana and also be able to take the Ghanaian publishing market international. Let’s all get involved to make the All African Book Fair a meeting hub for authors/publishers, creatives, children and the public. There will be activities such as special book readings by prominent figures, augmented reality with Gilbert Asante, silent book contest, live illustrations/painting etc.
